Gruesome, but with a point
I normally don't like books that hinge on violent scenes; I tend to find them gratuitous and often unnecessary. But with this book the violence wasn't just clearly necessary, it was also taken very seriously rather than the action movie bad-guys-drop-like-flies approach that many books take. The violence added to, rather than took away from, the message.
